‘A TINY and BRILLIANT LIGHT: the human spirit in a time of change’  is an e-book  collection of my  non-fiction  previously published, since the year 2000, in newspapers, magazines and blogs.

This collection of features and essays, based on my own experiences and reflections, focuses on the human spirit’s struggle for dignity in the face of wars, dislocation from homeland or the quest for asylum.

In this selection ‘humanity struggles endlessly’ for freedom, to progress a society where the marginalised especially have the same rights as the advantaged. Recent rapid changes, especially over the past twenty years in politics and the economy, have left many people stranded.

In this collection there are portraits of ordinary human beings who have inspired  my own journey, including the eulogy at my own brother’s funeral.

How do we keep our heads above water in this time of rapid change and how will the human spirit survive in this life and will love be enough to sustain us into the next?

“Rather than simply informing the reader with fully elaborated arguments, John’s style brings the reader into a social conversation, inviting him or her to make a response. His observations and thoughts are presented in a free-wheeling, engaging style. Two major themes are apparent in John’s work – the human condition, and the human reaching for transcendence.”
